“All that remains is the inevitable row about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not”
Manchester’s three-storey Asian food hall is turning into a free festive pop-up cinema as part of a build up to Christmas.
Hello Oriental, located just off Oxford Road, has revealed it will be screening the likes of Frozen, Home Alone, Elf and Die Hard everyday from Saturday (December 17) until December 22 to help people get into the Christmas spirit.
The underground food hall and market will screen the films on a huge projector, with family films shown in the morning and more ‘grown up’ favourites shown in the evenings. All screenings will be free, although booking is advised.
In addition, Hello Oriental will also be serving its usual menu, which includes Bao buns, Mongolian crispy lamb, and Malaysian curry tofu, alongside a specially-curated Christmas menu featuring prawn wontons and Korean turkey.
The film screenings will begin on December 17 with Frozen at 11am, followed by Home Alone on December 18 at the same time. On December 19, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York will be shown at 11am whilst The Holiday will screen at 9pm.
Other films to be screened during the seven-day run include Nativity, Love Actually, Elf, The Grinch, and, of course, Die Hard.
Speaking of the event, Hello Oriental co-founder Ricky Yip said: “Who doesn’t love a quality Christmas movie, so we thought we’d bust out the projector and get right into the festive spirit.
“All that remains is the inevitable row about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not. Mind you, we’re showing it, so it must be.”
Hello Oriental opened in February at the new ‘Symphony Park’ development on Circle Square. Put together by property developer Azim Kourah and Ricky Yip, the pair have devised all the venue’s menus themselves, with help from their executive chef team.
“We essentially wanted to open a venue where you can have one experience one day, maybe in the morning for breakfast or coffee,” Azim told the M.E.N earlier this year.
“Then maybe come again another day for lunch, and try the Vietnamese food, and then another day in the evening and enjoy the Chinese street food and cocktails.”
