The Japanese woman, whose video of being groped by a group of men in Delhi’s Paharganj area on Holi went viral on Twitter, took to the microblogging platform Twitter on Saturday to apologise to those who were offended by the video and said she loved India irrespective of what happened to her during the festival of colours.
In a long Twitter thread posted in Japanese on Saturday, the woman said she originally posted the video but was terrified when the video went viral and deleted it. “We sincerely apologise to those who were offended by the video,” the woman wrote in Japanese.
According to the Japanese woman, she had heard that it was dangerous for a woman to venture out during Holi. She was with a group of 35 friends when a group of men harassed her and forcefully smeared colours on her.
The Japanese woman said the video was taken accidentally by a Japanese friend of hers and there was no intention of conveying anything negative about Holi.
“The original Holi festival is a wonderful and fun traditional festival with the purpose of celebrating the arrival of spring by pouring coloured powder and water on each other and enjoying it regardless of skin colour or social status,” she wrote.
“I would like to express my sincere apologies for causing concern and anxiety in many ways, even though my goal was to convey the positive aspects and joys of India,” she added.
Expressing confidence in police action, the woman said she loved everything about India and has been to India many times. “It’s a wonderful country that you can’t hate even if an incident like this happens,” she wrote.
A video of the woman getting groped and harassed by a group of men in Delhi’s Paharganj area surfaced on Friday. One of the men even broke an egg on her head. She was also seen slapping one of the men in the video.
