NUG Urges International Community to Impose Strong Sanctions on the Coup Regime

Duwa Lashi La, the Acting President of the National Unity Government (NUG), has called on the international community to impose robust sanctions against the military regime, reflecting a widely-held view among International human rights NGOs that current sanctions against the Junta are far from robust.

NUG Acting President Duwa Lashi La has emphasized the need for the international community to maintain the isolation of the ‘terrorist’ military regime, impose robust sanctions, and extend support to the suffering people of Myanmar facing human rights violations by the military, in order to demonstrate that there is no place for military dictators in the world. The NUG Acting President made these remarks during his state speech on the  occasion of the 2nd anniversary of the declaration of the people’s resistance war against  the junta.

While the US,EU and other governments have imposed partial sanctions “Justice For Myanmar” NGO in a recent press release urged, “ the US and like-minded partners to take the gloves off, and adopt much stronger sanctions targeted at the Myanmar junta andits enablers.”

“If the international community provides effective assistance, it can minimize harm to the public and expedite our victory. In addition, we strongly urge all governments to cut off all financial flows to the Military Council, and also block the purchase of weapons, ammunition, and aviation fuel. International governments must maintain the isolation of the ‘terrorist’ Military Council, and must demonstrate that there is no place for military dictators in the world today,” The US government The US government has still refrained from  sanctioning the Myanma Oil & Gas Enterprise (MOGE), the junta’s single largest source of foreign currency earning.

Based on information gathered from the time of the military coup until August of this year, the NUG has reported that there have been 4,023 civilian fatalities as a result of indiscriminate attacks by Military Council troops, with no distinction made between military and civilian targets. The NUG states that more than 1,400 airstrikes have been conducted on residential and religious buildings during this period.

The Military Council troops are presently blatantly committing war crimes against humanity without facing any consequences. The role  the international community and their assistance is vital, to ensure accountability and punishment for these actions, the NUG stated.

In their efforts to assist the Myanmar people who are enduring human rights violations by the Military Council troops, the Acting President of the NUG called upon the international community to discontinue any cooperation with the ‘terrorist’ military and seek methods to provide direct support.

“The displaced individuals, the Rohingya people in IDP camps, and the Rakhine people affected by the Mocha cyclone are all in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Despite international aid efforts, it often fails to reach those who need it the most. Hence, we appeal to the international community to refrain from delivering aid through the ineffective ‘terrorist’ military regime on the ground. Instead, we earnestly request that the international community take direct actions to provide assistance and support to these vulnerable populations.”

After the military coup, individuals who refused to accept the coup participated in peaceful protests, while the elected members of parliament who had won the 2020 election came together to establish both the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the National Unity Government (NUG).
