Tamil Nadu Police Chief Refutes Claims by Raj Bhavan on Petrol Bomb Incident

Refuting claims made by Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan in the petrol bomb hurling incident, Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal on Thursday promised a fair and thorough probe into the case. Quoting Raj Bhavan’s complaint, Jiwal said the claims made in it were completely contrary to truth. According to the DGP, the police complaint, filed by Ravi’s deputy secretary Dr T Sengottaiyan, had also alleged that more than one person was involved in the petrol bomb incident. However, the DGP said, “Only one person was involved, who is a 42-year-old rowdy and a repeat offender named Karukka Vinoth.” He also asserted that video footage is available to back the police version. Earlier today, the Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan came down hard on the police, saying the latter did not register its complaint on the petrol bomb issue.

“Police did not register Raj Bhavan’s complaint on the attack. Suo moto diluted the attack as act of simple vandalism and in a hurry got arrested the accused and remanded (the accused) to jail at midnight waking up the magistrate and prevented detailed interrogation which could expose those behind attack. Fair investigation was killed before it began,” the Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan tweeted.

A Molotov cocktail, called a ‘petrol bomb’ in local parlance, was hurled at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. Claiming that the Raj Bhavan in its complaint alleged that there was damage to property, the DGP said there was “no damage or injury” in the incident.

He also said that Raj Bhavan claimed that the miscreants tried to barge into the premises through the main gate. Countering this point, DGP Jiwal said, “Karukka Vinoth, the accused hurled the petrol bomb from the opposite side and it landed near a barricade placed a few meters away from Raj Bhavan’s entrance gate. He was stopped immediately by the police on duty.”

Addressing an alleged attack on RN Ravi back in 2022, the DGP said that it was “completely untrue” that stones or sticks were hurled at Governor RN Ravi’s convoy. In a complaint to the Chennai Police Commissioner regarding the incident, Raj Bhavan had alleged that RN Ravi was “physically attacked” with sticks and stones while he was on his way to attend a function at the Dharmapuram Adhinam in Mayiladuthurai district on April 18, 2022. The DGP said, “It is completely untrue that stones or sticks were pelted on the Governor’s convoy. A black flag of one of the protestors who had gathered in the area fell on a vehicle which came after the governor’s vehicle and the convoy had passed the area.” He also said that 73 people have been arrested in this regard so far.
