A woman in Sri Lanka has delivered a healthy baby girl by a Caesarean section after a rare full-term ectopic pregnancy.
A medical team at De Soysa Hospital for Women in Colombo managed to successfully deliver the baby after a caesarean section on Friday.
A 21-year-old resident of Kinniya, Trincomalee was admitted to the Trincomalee hospital a few weeks ago, where the doctors observed that the fetus had grown outside the uterus in a placenta attached to the intestines.
Abdominal pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy, occurring only one in 30,000 pregnancies, according to statistics.
An ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg develops outside of the uterus, usually miscarries or is terminated by doctors because of the threat it can cause to the mother.
When the young mother was admitted to the Trincomalee Hospital, her fetus was 28 weeks old, and as this is a serious and rare type of pregnancy, the doctors have recommended that she should be transferred to the De Soysa Hospital for Women in Colombo for the operation to be successful.
Following admission to the De Soysa Hospital, the doctors have kept the mother under strict medical supervision until the fetus grows to 34 weeks.
Anesthesiologist Dr. Harshani Liyanage, Specialist Surgeon Professor Ishan De Soyza of Colombo National Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Dr. Mohammad Rishad of Colombo De Soysa Hospital, Gynecologist Dr. Kanishka Karunaratne and other staff performed the Caesarean section to deliver the baby successfully.
The newborn baby and the mother are doing very well at the De Soysa Hospital, the doctors said.
